Project Management is Risk Management and Risk Management is Project Management

Join us for our December Breakfast Program. Effective risk management is essential to conceive and deliver a successful construction project. When risk management is skillfully applied to a construction project, it can steer the project away from significant difficulties and seize opportunities at the right time. If risks are ignored or not fully understood, the project often runs into distress and, in some cases, fails to deliver what has been promised.

PMA Consultants LLC has been involved with project risk management for over 20 years and has helped many projects across all industry sectors to develop and execute a risk management plan. When applying a robust risk management plan, participants in a construction project will routinely identify risks, prioritize them, assess their effects to the project, and then develop strategies and implement tactics to minimize their impact. These efforts have the biggest return when done early in the project, but benefits continue when the process is updated throughout its life.

In this breakfast session, risk practitioners from PMA will present what constitutes an effective risk management plan, share experiences from a number of construction projects and illustrate why effective risk management can be so beneficial to the success of your project.

Speaker Bios:

Gerald P. “Jerry” Klanac:

Jerry Klanac is a Managing Director with PMA Consultants LLC and has been with PMA since 1989. Prior to joining PMA, Jerry was a cost & schedule engineer for Exxon Research and Engineering Company and successfully controlled several refinery projects. He has more than 35 years project management experience for United States and international construction projects, especially in oil and gas, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, infrastructure and water/wastewater. He has consulted on projects with a cumulative value of over $50 billion. Currently, Jerry overseas PMA’s Global Oil and Gas practice and has been a leader within PMA’s risk management practice for the past 18 years, conducting more than 100 qualitative and quantitative risk assessments for a variety of worldwide clients. Jerry’s helped to develop PMA’s risk analysis process, which is becoming a generally accepted practice. The track record for forecasting outcomes based on PMA’s risk analysis process is exceptional. Jerry has significant expertise in project cost / schedule controls, project scheduling, cost estimating, evaluating construction labor productivity, expert analysis and evaluation of change orders and claims, developing project management processes, preparing contract strategies, and conducting probabilistic analysis of cost estimates and schedules. Jerry also is an accomplished project management trainer, teaching courses at University of Dayton, Moscow School of Management (SKOLKOVO) as well as in client environments. Jerry has an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago and a B.S in Civil Engineering from the University of Dayton.

Eric Lowther:

Eric Lowther has more than 20 years of experience in construction planning, contract administration, owner’s representative, and program / project management. His experience includes complex projects spanning major transportation, power, airport, water, wastewater, process, pharmaceutical, healthcare, architectural and infrastructure industries. Throughout his career, he has gained significant expertise in project controls, project management, claims analysis and quantitative schedule risk analysis. Mr. Lowther has analyzed construction costs, damages, schedule delay, adverse weather impacts, differing site conditions, acceleration, disruption and labor productivity. He is a certified Project Management Professional and a LEED Accredited Professional.
